(NM 9263 1696) Castle (NR) (Site of)

There are no visible remains of this castle which is said to have stood upon the principal island in Loch na Sreinge, having evidently disappeared by 1871.

Name Book 1871.

In feudal times, a band of freebooters made this their headquarters, and for nearly a century infested not only the surrounding district, but made predatory incursions to the adjoining counties.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

Nearby are the ruins of a small, sub-rectangular building of indeterminate age and which appears to have been constructed of dry-stone masonry.

RCAHMS 1975.

It was not possible to obtain access to this site.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 14 October 1969.
