Archaeology Notes ( - 1971)

NM90SW 3 9057 0425.

NM 905 042. A low sheet of rock, bearing at least 9 shallow cups, largest 3" in diameter, is situated W of the road leading from Finchairn farm to the shepherd's house, and S of dyke near the latter.

M Campbell and M Sandeman 1961-2.

NM9057 0426. This cup marked rock is as described.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (DWR) 27 October 1971.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1983)

Three groups of decorated rock surfaces have been found close to the former shepherd's cottage at Fincharn.

(1) At the SW end of a rocky ridge, which flanks the N side of the track from Fincharn farmsteading, and about 100 m WSW of the cottage, there are at least nine widely-spaced cupmarks measuring up to 80 mm by 30 mm (Campbell and Sandeman 1964; Petzsch 1973).
