Watching Brief (19 September 2016 - 18 October 2016)
AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Camerons Ltd. to conduct an archaeology watching brief in respect to ground-breaking works associated with the redevelopment of the existing property at 2-6 Buccleugh Street, Melrose, Scottish Borders (Planning Reference No. 16/00314/FUL).
The development is located within the Schedule Monument Area of Melrose Abbey and Precinct (SM 90214) therefore Scheduled Monument Consent was obtained prior to excavation of the maximum depth.
The excavation was limited to locating existing services to the front and rear of the property and uncovered two possible 19th century walls to the rear of the property and made ground to a maximum depth of 1.15m to the front of the property.
No other significant archaeological features or finds were discovered.
