Publication Account (1998)

The George and Abbotsford Hotel, once called the 'George Inn' figure 23.W, was one of these. An early nineteenth-century building, it was originally a two-storeyed block of six bays, with a pilastered doorcase containing the door and side lights. The ground floor windows have moulded architraves and cornices, as do the upper floor windows, with a tripartite window over the door. Later additions, such as a second floor, an attic and an extension on the west, are clear indications of the growing demand for accommodation in Melrose.
