Archaeology Notes

HY30SW 8029 unlocated

NLO: Scapa Flow [name centred HY 36 00]

Pentland Firth [name centred ND 35 81].

(Classified as drifter: date of loss cited as 8 June 1942). Catherine (Catharine?): this vessel foundered in [the] Scapa area. Registration: British. 78grt.

(Location of loss cited as N58 53.0 W3 10.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, there being apparently no accurate record of the location of loss. Ridley cites a location within the Flow but Larn and Larn locate the loss 'in the Scapa Flow area', which may allow it to be placed outside the Flow, in the Pentland Firth.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 10 December 2002.

G Ridley 1992; R and B Larn 1998.
