(Area : HY 390 241) A rectangular lean-to dovecot with crow-stepped gables, and built of harled rubble, stands in the garden of Woodwick House.
The lintel bears a shield with the date '1648' but the dovecot seems to be later than this. The lintel may have come from the house of Woodwick, of which no trace remains.
RCAHMS 1946.
A dovecot, as described and in good condition, at HY 3900 2405. No further information could be obtained about the history of the original Woodwick House. The present house was built c.1912.
Visited by OS(RL) 1 June 1967.
Change Of Use (1970)
Dovecote converted into an Episcoplian chapel in the 1970's
and still in use as such. RGL Jan 1988.
Orkney Smr Note (January 1988)
In the grounds of Woodwick House is a rectangular dovecote of
harled rubble, measures 19ft 9in x 21ft 2in. The flanks are crow-
stepped, and the slated, lean-to roof has a dormer on the S,
through which the pigeons entered. A doorway below has freestone
jambs and lintel, all three rounded at the arris, while the lintel
bears a chevrons and flanked by the date 1648, and the initials
D.M.C., probably for David McCellan, a former proprietor. The
dovecote does not seem to be quite as early as this. Possibly
door-piece has been removed from house of Woodwick of which no
trace remains. [R1] [R2]
