Archaeology Notes

NB41SW 8001 c. 427 138

N58 2.3 W6 21.6

NLO: Loch Sealg [name centred NB 340 105]

Loch Odhairn [name centred NB 415 146]

A' Chabag [name: NB 427 138] .

Formerly entered as NB31SE 8001 at cited location NB c. 36 10 [N58 0 W6 28].

(Classified as wooden ketch, in ballast: date of loss cited as 18 April 1903). Crest: this vessel stranded on Kebock Head, Lewis. Capt. Kerr.

Registration: Stornoway. Built 1862. 47grt. Length: 18m. Beam: 4m.

(Location of loss cited as N58 2.33 W6 21.5).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative, being derived from the unverified location of loss that is cited by Whittaker. Kebock Head is not noted as such on the 1997 edition of the OS 1:50,00 map, but is apparently to be equated with the headland of A' Chabag on the E coast of Lewis, immediately S of the mouth of Loch Odhairn.

The entrance to Loch Sealg (Loch Shell) is ill-defined.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 29 August 2002.
