(NL 9360 4116) An Dun (NR)

OS 1:10,000map, (1976)

Dun, An Dun, Eilean Dubh: This dun stands in a strong natural position on the uneven summit of a small tidal island, which is separated from the mainland by sheer rock-chasms up to 14m deep. Access is possible only at low tide up the broken rock-ledges that form the seaward side of the islet.

Irregular on plan, the dun measures about 21m from NW to SE by 15m transversely within a wall which, for most of its circuit, follows the margin of the summit. The remains of the wall are heavily overgrown, but the core material survives as a stony band up to 3m thick with the outer face visible in many places, standing to a maximum height of 0.8 m in three courses. The position of the entrance is not apparent, but it is likely that it lay somewhere on the NE side where there is the only reasonable access to the summit from a small sandy beach below. The interior contains the remains of a structure of no great age built of stones torn from the dun wall.
