14 August 1873, ADVANCE, Official No. 67,997, new, not classed, of Glasgow, built Blackhill, iron, length 65.7, breadth 13.6, depth 5.8, length to breadth 4.8, length to depth 11.3, depth to breadth 0.43, tonnage 41 gross register, 32 net register, engines 9 h.p. as register, engine h.p. as proportion to gross tonnage 0.22, carrying slates (about 70 tons), departed Easdale for Glasgow, 3 crew, foundered one mile off Colipel, Luing Island, Hebrides, weather stormy, sprang a leak during a storm and foundered. She carried a heavy cargo, and was probably overladen.

List of British Steamships which have been reported to the Board of Trade as having foundered between the 1st of January 1873 and the 16th of May 1880.

Greenock, 16th Aug., the ADVANCE (steam lighter), of Glasgow, McGowan, sailed from Easdale, for Glasgow, with slates, yesterday, and when opposite Cullipool sprung a leak and went down in deep water: crew saved.
