Archaeology Notes

NS56NW 376 c.5077 6688

A barrage balloon mooring site has been identified from an RAF WWII oblique air photograph (No.1 CAM, 6089, 13 October 1942) in an area now built over by Glendee Gardens.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), March 2002

Examination of an earlier WW II RAF vertical aerial photograph (A309, 2607, flown 1 May 1941 [SC910887)) shows that this barrage balloon mooring site was located immediately S of Glendee Road. The evidence from the photograph would suggest that this mooring site may not have had a fixed position.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), September 2004

Activities

Field Visit (29 March 2017)

Nothing is now visible in an area occupied by a housing estate of a World War Two Barrage Balloon anchoring site, which is visible on an RAF photograph (No. 1 CAM, 6089) taken on 13 October 1942. This site was one of an extensive network that protected the population and industry of central Glasgow and the Clyde from low flying enemy bombers.

Visited by HES, Survey and Recording (ATW, AKK) 29 March 2017.
