(NK 0009 6549) Church of Philorth (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map, (1959)

The Church of Philorth, dedicated to St. Medan, is first mentioned in 1296. It stood in the old graveyard on the Links near the farm of Kirktown (Pratt 1858) but was abandoned in 1574 (HBD No. 1).

J B Pratt 1858.

The theory that part of the chruch walls still stand on the E and W walls of the mausoleum of the Frasers of Park is wrong because when the graveyard was extended in 1910 the massive, well-defined foundations of the church were found partly within and partly without the west wall of the original graveyard.

J Cranna 1914.

There is no trace of the church. Part of the old graveyard wall (restored) still stands, 0.6m thick and in places 2.2m high.

Visited by OS (RL) 14 January 1969.
