(HY 3127 1217) Standing Stone (NR)

OS 6" map, Orkney, 2nd ed., (1903).

The 'Barnhouse Stone' stands some 10 1/2ft high by about 7ins thick. It expands upwards, from 3ft 8ins wide at the base to 6 ft wide, about 8 ft above the ground.

(Scheduled as the 'Barn Stone').

RCAHMS 1946, visited 10 August 1928.

Barnhouse Stone (locally accepted name) is as described by the Commission.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (NKB) 10 May 1966.

Activities

Orkney Smr Note

The 'Barnhouse Stone' is about 10ft 6in high and is set up

with its major axis nearly NW and SE with its broader end

uppermost. Its width at the base is 3ft 8in, but at 5ft above the

ground it is 5ft 2in, and at its broadest part, about 8ft above

ground, almost 6ft. The thickness averages about 7in. There are

no traces of packing, nor any traces of sculpturings on the

surface.
