Archaeology Notes

NT47NE 118 4530 7826

Four buildings which formed part of a large military camp within the estate during WW II are situated about 250m S of Gosford House (NT47NE 49.00). Mainly used by the army, the camp also held German prisoners in the latter part of the war.

Information from Defence of Britain Project recording forms, Mr P Chalmers/G Walker, 1997

The camp was situated to the SW of Gosford House and to the SE of the public road.

The prisoner-of-war camp is visible on vertical air photograph (106G/Scot/UK 20, 5233, flown 15 April 1946) which shows the hutted camp and the perimeter fence. Many of the huts are set out in 'spokes of a wheel' form with others (Nissens) grouped together. The perimeter fence shows clearly along with what may a second fence in sections.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), June 2006
