Orkney Smr Note

....bridge of Scuan in the township of Corston, adjoining

the site of the old house of Scuan. Built into upper side of

bridge is a carved stone bearing the initals and date I.L. 1694

(sketch) and two carved human faces.

About 8ft wide.....upper half having two eyes each about 3ft

wide 2.5ft high - square headed and lower section arched and the

same breadth and height. Doubtless bridge has been widened at

some time and the upper section that bears the inscripted stone

may be older. [R1]

....central pier of irregular shape, and the openings on one side

are arched, while those on the other side are lintelled... roadway

.... increased to present width of 10ft 9in, as it oversails the

substructure, its outer edges being supported on flagstones, one

of which bears the initials and date IL 1694... 3.5in height. At

each end of the inscription is carved a human head. [R2]
