Archaeology Notes

NT08SE 41.09 0893 8322

A barrage balloon mooring site has been identified from post-war RAF vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 10, 7037-8, flown 15 April 1946) to the E of Windylaw Strip at Windylaw Head.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), January 2002

A visit made to this site by Mr Gordon Wilkie found that many of the concrete mooring blocks and the larger central mooring block removed from the mooring site in the postwar period have been scattered on the E side of a NE to SW path through the wood on Windylaw Head. About 58 blocks were found within an area between NT 0880 8340 to NT 0860 8330.

In addition, in the grounds of Brucehaven farm is a small concrete enclosure about 3ft in height possibly associated with the barrage balloon mooring site.

Information by letter from Mr G Wilkie to RCAHMS, 16 August 2004
