Archaeology Notes

NR35NW 60.01 centred 3105 5955

This area was the former military oil storage depot which was connected via a pipeline to the pier at Bowmore (NR35NW 43). There was also a fuel pipeline to Port Ellen Airfield (NR35SW 10). The circular base of one of the oil tanks survives at NR 3112 5953 in use as a car park. At NR 3102 5952 is a building thought to contain fragments of the RAF pumping station. Four oil storage tanks were built, all of which are visible on post-war RAF vertical air photographs, (LEU/UK 6, 7080-1, flown 24 April 1948).

Much of the area has subsequently been built over and is now occupied by modern housing.
