A barrage balloon mooring site has been identified from a World War II RAF vertical air photograph (NLA 44, 5.59, flown 27 August 1942) about 150m W of Newark Castle (NS37SW 1.00) within Newark Works. The site has been redeveloped since the end of the war and a depot built on it.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), December 2001.

Activities

Field Visit (5 July 2017)

Nothing is visible in an area now occupied by the shipbuilders, Ferguson Marine, of a World War Two Barrage Balloon anchoring site, which is shown on an RAF photograph (NLA 44, 5.59) taken on 27 August 1942. The site was one of an extensive network that protected the population and industry of central Glasgow and the Clyde from low flying enemy bombers.

Visited by HES, Survey and Recording (ATW, ARG) 5 July 2017.
