(NJ 9383 0878) Site of Bishop's Hospital (NR)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1974).

The site of an almshouse, dedicated to St Mary, and founded by Bishop Gavin Dunbar 1531-2. It was for twelve old men and continued in existence until 1786 when the proprietor of Seton exchanged this site for a large house in Don Street where the bedesmen lived for a time. There is no trace of the almshouse.

Visited by OS (JLD) 12 September 1952.

J Milne 1911; D E Easson 1957.

A short section of wall, now incorporated in the boundary wall of Seaton Park, is probably a fragment of Dunbar's Hospital. It is of rubble and mortar construction, and incorporates what is either a blocked window or aumbry.
