Archaeology Notes

HY31NW 28 3072 1546.

An earth-house, covered over and no longer visible, was excavated in 1928, revealing a clay-lined chamber 14 ft by 7 ft and 2 ft 3 ins high, with a roof of huge slabs supported by 8 stone pillars. There were no indications that the passage was stone-lined and only one lintel slab was discovered during the excavations.

RCAHMS 1946.

The site of an earth-house, as described by the Commission, was indicated by Mr J W Anderson (owner of, Biggings, Grimeston, Harray), who was present at the excavation in 1928, at HY 3072 1546 on a low swelling in a pasture field.

Surveyed at 1/2500.
