Archaeology Notes

NJ90NW 189 94422 06361.

Formerly the North of Scotland Bank. Built 1839-42, architect Archibald Simpson.

W A Brogden 1988.

(Location cited as NJ 9442 0636). Bank, 1839-42, designed by Archibald Simpson and built by James Matthews for the Town and Country Bank. Three-storey Renaissance with giant order Corinthian pilaster at the two lower floors, red garnite details at the centre door and first floor of end bays. The corner is balanced by two 2-storey wings of very crisply detailed granite blocks, the windows being set in sunk panels with a modilion cornice and balustrade above. Much of the original interior survives.
