(NJ 8149 3411) St Bartholomew's Chapel (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map, (1959)

A chapel dedicated to St Bartholomew, and said to have been erected in the 13th century stood in a graveyard, which is now occupied by a school, and is partly in use as a school playground. Scott (1895) states that it was connected to the Abbey of Arbroath, which was founded in 1178, and that the chapel itself was probably built at about that time.

Name Book 1868; W F Scott 1895.

No trace of the chapel. The graveyard is still in use.

Visited by OS (NKB) 12 February 1969.

No trace of a chapel can be seen in this burial-ground. Some of the gravestones date from the 19th century, but most are of 20th-century date.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 28 August 2002.
