Archaeology Notes

HY31NE 14 39 18.

Three cists were discovered in a group, in 1858, 'close to the house of the tenant of the farm and mill of Isbister. There was no barrow visible, and the ground had been disturbed all around, but Petrie thought he could still trace 'the outline of a barrow of large size around the largest cist'.

This cist, 5 ft 8 ins long, contained a skeleton at each end, the one deliberately crouched, the other possibly dismembered before burial. The second cist, 3 ft long, contained the remains of a partially burnt skeleton, and the third, about 18 ins square, contained a heap of fragments of burnt bones.

G Petrie 1868.
