(NJ 8499 2740) Cairn Brogie (NR) (Site of) Urns, Human Remains and Gold Coins found (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1959)

A cairn of considerable size stood on the Hill of Cairnbrogie within living memory. Urns, human remains, gold coins and a stone 'trough' are reported to have been found when the cairn was removed. The 'trough', of red sandstone, neatly chiselled 2' x 1'3" x 8" deep is at Cairnbrogie. (NJ 85 27).

Name Book 1868.

No trace. This site is on top of the hill, in a cultivated field. No knowledge of the 'trough' at Cairnbrogie.

Visited by OS (RL) 4 April 1972.

The indicated location is on the top of a hill, in arable ground and at an altitude of 136m OD.

NMRS, MS/712/80.

Nothing is visible of this cairn, which stood at the edge of what is now a cultivated field about 490m N of Cairnbrogie farmsteading (NJ82NW 163). The present whereabouts of the 'urns', 'gold coins', and the stone 'trough' are not known.
