Archaeology Notes

ND24NW 29 2215 4815

The farmstead and enclosed fields of Kensary are situated on reclaimed moorland to the N of the Kensary Burn, accessible from a track that leads W through the neighbouring steading at Rowens (ND24NW 30). The buildings lie central to the fields and comprise a cottage, byre, stable and outstore. The farmstead was occupied in 1871 when the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map was published and by 1907 a water-powered threshing machine had been introduced, fed by a lade from Dubh Lochs to the W (Caithness 1877 and 1907, sheet xxiii). The site was visited in 2000.
