(NJ 7481 5887) Law of Balgreen (NR)
OS 6" map, Banffshire, 2nd ed., (1903)
The Law of Balgreen is situated in a small copse on the false crest of a ridge at a height of 410ft OD. It consists of a steep-sided circular mound of earth and small stones measuring 27m in diameter and 4m in height with a flat top about 7m in diameter. There are traces of an apparent ditch on the NW and E sides but this may be later quarrying. Minor mutilations on the E side, otherwise good condition.
Its shape and size are suggestive of a small motte but it is probably a large cairn of which there are other examples in the neighbourhood. There are no local traditions concerning it (ONB 1869).
An Elizabethan silver coin dated 1582 was found in the adjacent field. Re-surveyed at 1/2500.
