(NJ 7031 4752) Site of Dorlaithers Castle (NR)

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1928)

There is no record of the erection of Dorlaithers Castle.

All that remains of it is part of a wall on the north side of no great thickness or strength. It was square on plan.

Name Book 1869.

Dorlaithers Castle (NR) (Remains of) (OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 1st ed., 1869) is shown as the building which underlies the symbol on current 6" OS map but with what appears to be a courtyard in the centre. A rectangular pecked enclosure adjoins it on the south, but whether this building is that mentioned by Object Name Book of the Ordnance Survey (ONB, 1869) as 'part of a wall on the north side' is not clear.

(Undated) information in NMRS.

The site of Dorlaithers Castle is occupied by a modern farm cottage (NJ74NW 175.01 7030 4753). No remains of the castle were seen at the site.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 4 September 1964.
