Archaeology Notes

NJ74NW 1 c.72 49.

Hospital Turriff: An almshouse was founded at Turriff by Alexander Comyn in 1272/3. It is suggested that its revenues were merged with those of the church (NJ74NW 12) in 1412.

D E Easson 1957.

Some houses called Abbey Land, (Maison Dieu), indicate the position of a hospital or alms-house founded in 1272. The lands of the hospital were alienated in 1497.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

The most likely site for the hospital is that of the present manse. In the east gable of the old church there is a carved stone bearing ten heads which may have come from the old hospital.

J Milne 1890.

The carved stone described by Milne (1890) is in the east gable of the old church (NJ74NW 12).

No further information was found during field investigation.
