Archaeology Notes

HY22SE 3 2727 2013

(HY 2727 2013) An earth-house was removed during the construction of Skaebrae [Skeabrae] aerodrome (HY22SE 59.00) in the 1939-45 war. It was similar in type to those at Rennibister (HY31SE 3 ) and Grain (HY41SW 19).

(Both these latter are typical Orkney-type IA souterrains, with roofs supported by pillars - 2).

H Marwick 1951.

There is now no trace of this earth-house. Mr Kirkness of Tufta, Dounby, Orkney, verified the siting on the OS 6" but was unable to indicate the findspot on the ground due to infirmity.

Visited by OS (NKB) 21 May 1967.
