Archaeology Notes

NJ71NE 47 c. 79 16

See also NJ71NE 41.

A greenstone axe-hammer from Kintore (name: NJ 79 16) was purchased for the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) from the collection of John Rae, Aberdeen, in 1892. It measures 4 (102mm) by 2 1/4 (57mm) by 1 3/4ins (44mm), imperfect at the hammer end, and has a raised ridge surrounding the half-hole on either face. It was formerly represented in the museum by a cast (donated by John Rae in 1880 - Accession no. AH 47).

J Rae 1892; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1893.

This is possibly the presumed battle-axe from Kintore that Roe (1966) notes, but could not be traced at the time of her investigation. It had apparently been found at NJ 796 155 'on the brow of the little hill presumably Tuach Hill, 100 yards north from the circle (NJ71NE 27), and associated with some burnt deposit'.

C E Dalrymple 1884; F E S Roe 1966.

There is no change to the existing record.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 29 October 1996.
