Archaeology Notes

NM82NW 166 82889 27397

This World War II Extended Defence Officers Post (XDO) is situated about 50m SE of Gallanachmore Cottage in what is now Gallanachmore Caravan Site. It is annotated as 'Lookout Tower' on the current edition of the OS 1:2500 and 1:10000 scale maps (1976).

It is a large concrete tower with a pointed top with an electrical contactor room. The tower was the control position for the submarine minefield placed across the Sound of Kerrera. The contactor room still has some of the original equipment in situ and within the tower, part of the 'basket', where the duty officer would once have stood, is still there. The former engine room is now in use as a toilet.
