Archaeology Notes

NO68SE 1.01 6940 8003

The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map indicates the remains of the 'Old Castle' of Drumtochty at an altitude of 205m OD, on a gentle slope and within an area which is now afforested. A rectangular shape is depicted but no further information is supplied.

[Attached to record for NMRS NO68SE 5: GIS plot attached].

NMRS, MS/712/101.

Comparison with other 'old castles' suggests that this building was a tower-house antecedent to the country house NO68SE 1.00.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 3 April 2001.

Activities

Field Visit (2007)

Mature trees cover the site but it is clearly more than a simple rectangular enclosure. There is an area of stone that appears to contain lime mortar. To the W of this a windblown tree has revealed a small patch of compacted material that might be the remains of a floor level. The enclosure appears to have been truncated by a later hollow-way (the present track). An earlier hollow-way leads to the SE corner of the enclosure and seems to continue on the same alignment to the W beyond the enclosure.
