Bowmen's Road: The remains of a road or entrenchment, the defensive side towards the south, supposed to have been made by the Scots as a roadway leading between encampments, and a defensive work in repelling the Danes. The road is said to have run from Montgrew (NJ4530 5170) to Knock-hill (NJ 5375 5437) via the hill of Silliearn.

Name Book 1868.

Revised at 1/2500 and possible remains surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 6 February 1964.

This feature is considered to be a drove road and will not be treated as an antiquity.

Information contained in letter from A Clarke 19 May 1965.

Activities

Field Visit (21 July 1943)

'Bowmen's Road', Edingight Wood.

A footpath, presumed to be the 'road' in question, runs parallel with the S edge of Edingight Wood about 100 yds from it. It showed no marks of wheels or runners.
