Archaeology Notes

NJ51SW 82 54568 12460.

This farmstead dates from c.1880 and has an extended U-shaped plan. It includes byres, stables, cattle courts, a milk-cow shed, a tack room, a workshop and stores. A detached range in the centre includes a bothy and a henhouse, and a midden lies behind it. The buildings are constructed of roughly squared stone with galleting, dressed pink granite quoins and lintels, and have slate roofs. Many of the original fittings survive and these include a cheese press at the gable end of the stables. The detached barn, which now has a corrugated-iron roof, has a deep pit for a water wheel and may be of earlier date than the other buildings. The farmhouse is detached and lies adjacent to the W. When visited in 2000 the farmstead was in use and was in good condition.
