Archaeology Notes

NJ53NW 14 5167 3652.

One of two iron hammers found under a cairn on the summit of the Hill of Bucharn (NJ 5167 3652) was presented to the NMAS on 14th February, 1853. Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1855.

The implement presented to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) is of iron and would seem to be a pick-head, rather than a hammer. Both ends have been broken and the original length is indeterminable but it is now 8.3ins long by 2.9ins greatest width and is pierced by a hole 1.15ins in diameter.

OS (DT) 31 August 1961.

There is no sign of a cairn on the Hill of Bucharn.

Visited by OS (EGC) 15 September 1961.
