Archaeology Notes

NJ52SE 20 c. 57 24

The remains of a chapel were believed traditionally by the older people to have existed about 1800 on the ridge between the present farms of Johnston and Mill of Johnston (NJ 57 24). A holding called Chapel Croft which is mentioned up to the beginning of the late century in the Whitehaugh estate books seems to support this belief.

Aberdeen Journal Notes & Queries 1908.

No further information.

Visited by OS (NKB), 18 September 1967.

The site of the chapel that is said to have stood on the ridge between Johnston farmsteading (NJ52SE 44) and Mill of Johnston farmsteading (NJ52SE 43), has never been located. The area in question is now under arable cultivation and no trace of any buildings was identified on the date of visit.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 23 June 1999.
