Archaeology Notes

HY40NW 19.02 centred 44436 08075

A series of nine oil storage tanks have been constructed into the hillside immediately E of the pier (HY40NW 19.00) and below Fea farmsteading. Work on the tanks started during June/July of 1940 and was completed early in 1941. In addition to the oil tanks, offices, air-raid shelters and water services were built within the enclosure which surrounded this installation. The construction works are shown on a plan by Shell-Mex (Shell-Mex Scapa progess drawing, Scapa -AM, 1561-2B, dated Nov 15th 1939).
