Archaeology Notes

HP61SW 24 608 113

A rectangular structure with walls built of very large blocks, measuring 17.0m by 8.0m. A central aisle c.0.8m wide, defined by stones on edge just protruding through the turf, runs from end to end. There are surrounding ruined enclosure and field walls, and a modern enclosure lies immediately to the N. Period and purpose uncertain. A circular bank 7.8m diam. enclosing a small mound lies 45.0m SE. Possibly an old crub.

Visited by OS, 5 May 1969

One small unroofed structure is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Orkney and Shetland (Shetland) 1882, sheet ii). One unroofed L-shaped structure of two compartments and an enclosure wall marked by pecked lines are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1973).
