Archaeology Notes

NJ42NE 8 c. 48 28.

Two cup-marked porphyritic stones found at the farm of Scurdargue, Rhynie, were removed to Kirkton farmhouse, Bunchrew, near Inverness. The cups are unusually large and basin-like and some are surrounded by shallow rings.

Both Callander (1935) and MacDonald (1891) refer to many cup-marked stones 'around Balkinny' and 'between Rhynie and the Cabrach' being found and many have been taken away.

W Jolly 1882; J MacDonald 1891; J G Callander 1935.

No further information could be obtained about these cup and ring-marked stones at Scurdargue, or at Kirkton, near Inverness (NH64NW 7).

Visited by OS (NKB) 2 October 1967.

There is no change to the existing record.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 15 January 1997.
