Archaeology Notes

NJ42NE 11 c. 49 27.

A perforated stone axe-hammer of dark coloured stone, 5 1/2 inches long, 3 3/4 inches wide, tapering to a conically pointed butt, found at Rhynie, was in the collection of John Rae, Aberdeen, c. 1884 (later sold by auction in Edinburgh, 1892). A cast of it, Accession no. AH 58, was given to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) (PSAS 1885) but the original was apparently given to the Museum by the Hon. Lady Binning, Tynminghame House, c. 1932 (PSAS 1932).

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1885; NMAS 1892; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1932.

The cast of this axe-hammer (NMS: AH 58) is in the Royal Museum of Scotland; the original was given to the museum about 1932 and it is probably the 'hammer' from Rhynie (NMS: AH 58A) listed in the museum's accessions register.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 15 January 1997.
