At the beginning of the 19th century Kinning Park, lying between the River Clyde and Pollockshields, was an area of relatively open countryside. By the end of the century, rapid development had seen the creation of a burgh consisting of densely packed tenement housing and industry. The Burgh of Kinning Park existed until merger with the City of Glasgow in 1912.
Most of the residents of the area lived in tenements typical of Glasgow working-class districts. The quality of the housing varied; skilled workers lived in tenement flats rented for yearly periods, while poorer families often lived in rooms let for months or weeks.
