A Roman melon bead found in an 'underground dwelling' Sandwick, Orkney was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) by Dr J Grant in 1914.

Melon-shaped bead of blue vitreous paste 0.75in in diameter,

found in an underground dwelling. Donated by Dr J. Grant. [R1]

A characteristic feature among the finds from Roman forts in

Scotland is the occurance of melon shaped beads of dark blue or

green glass, or sometimes of a paler blue vitreous paste. [R2]
