Pollokshaws Burgh Hall, 2025 Pollokshaws Road, Bengal Street, 1895, Sir R Rowand Anderson
An eminent Edinburgh architect, who practised infrequently in Glasgow, Anderson was an academic concerned with the revival of traditional Scottish details. In one of his best Glasgow buildings, after the Central Station Hotel (see Central Glasgow Guide), he here commemorated the recently demolished Old Glasgow College, especially in the bell tower, the main entrance and the 17th-century Scots Renaissance crowsteps and strapwork pediments. Some of the finer features of the Old College are reputed to have been reused. The interior was 'modernised' in the 1960s and 1970s. A Community Trust is undertaking a much-needed restoration, including the large hall, with its original vaulted ceiling and a minimum of classical detail.
