(Centred NJ 120 326) Cairns (NR)

OS 6"map, Morayshire, 2nd ed., (1905)

"A number of small irregular conical piles of stones, said to have been erected over the slain in a conflict while opposing the invasion of the Danes."

Name Book 1871.

Area Centred NJ 1207 3265. On a flat topped, slightly raised area, c.550ft OD, between the main Grantown - Keith road and the Burn of Duiar are about eighty small cairns. They are composed of small stones largely covered with turf. Most of them are either circular or oval in shape measuring from 2.5m in diameter to 8.0m x 7.0m and have an average height of c. 0.3m. There are no definate traces of fields, the area being obscured by patches of reeds and no associated structures were noted. The evidence points to a field system, the limits of the fields being outlined by the clearance heaps, It is probable that the system extended further to the north and south but cultivation and marshy ground have obliterated any traces.

Visited by OS (W D J) 1 September 1966.
