Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Some time before 1836 a collection of heavily corroded arms and coins were discovered when a hillock above the Black Burn was being trenched. No details about the arms or coins were recorded.

Archaeology Notes

NJ13SE 8 1793 3152.

(NJ 1793 3152) Arms and Coins found AD 1842.

OS 6"map, Banffshire, 2nd ed., (1905)

Some arms, too corroded to be preserved, and coins which were sold to a silversmith, were found before 1836 (although the Name Book says 1842) when a small hillock was being trenched.

New Statistical Account (NSA, written by Rev W Alster - 1836) 1845; Name Book 1869.

No further information: The hillock is natural, and the published siting symbol on the OS 6"map (1905) falls near the top of the W slopes where vague traces of trenching can be seen to commence.

Visited by OS (R L) 25 August 1966.
