Archaeology Notes

NH98SW 9 9163 8445

A well dedicated to St Colman (Tobar-mo-Colmac) is situated near the Library in Portmahomack village (Watson 1904) and 100 yards from the site of the chapel (NH98SW 6). St Colman's Well is said to have been in continuous use for some hundreds of years up to the present day (Davidson 1948).

W J Watson 1904; J M Davidson 1948.

Mr Duff (A Duff, Chapel Street, Portmahomack) recalls that the well at NH 9163 8445 was referred to as Colman's Well many years ago, but the name is not now generally used.

Visited by OS (I S S), 6 September 1972.
