Archaeology Notes

NS49NE 55 4197 9090

Balmaha pyroligneous Acid Works, comprising four roofed buildings situated on the NE side of the public road and opposite the harbour, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1865, sheet xiii). A mill pond and lade are also depicted on the 1st edition map. The lade starts at NS c.4240 9118 within Balmaha Plantation and draws water from the S-facing slope Conic Hill. At NS c.4216 9102 it skirts around the N edge of the enclosed and improved ground at Balmaha to enter the mill-pond at NS c.4201 9096.

There is a large roofed building, on a different location, shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1977) and remnants of the lade and mill-pond are also marked.
