The number of Free Churches in the district is testimony to popular dissatisfaction with landowners’ exercise of their rights to appoint ministers. Immediately after the Disruption a Free Church was built in King’s Road in 1844. Another was built at the same date at the Isle, on a site provided by Whithorn town council, in the harbour on land reclaimed below the high tide mark and so beyond the jurisdiction of the landowner (fig 30).
