Architecture Notes

ARCHITECT: Michael Hopkins & Associates (top deck/dome)

Built on the site of Younger's Brewery, retaining features of the exterior rear wall and turret. Situated at the edge of Holyrood Park, opposite new Scottish Parliament site. Engineer: Ove Arup and Partners. Total cost: 15m. Lead architect: Jim Greave. Features an arched white canopy using PTFE fabric with eight piercing masts, covering a box containing exhibition space, offices, workshops, and conference facilities, with a car park below. A York stone 'amphitheatre' leads to the pavilion. New west side is a 450mm thick load-bearing wall, using Stanton mason stone with surface detailing. Roof protected by wall of glass, with closure flap allowing movement in the roof of 700mm upwards and 300mm downwards. Education room floors by Forbo Nairn, Kirkcaldy. A Millenium project, opened by HM the Queen, July 1999.
