Field Visit (4 September 1996)
NN81NE 89 8695 1690
In a field, formerly an apple orchard, to the NW of Lintibert there are the shuttered concrete floors of at least thirteen Nissen huts, the remains of a Second World War army base. Two of the hut bases are very small (EARN96 306, 316), measuring 3.7m by 2m and 2.7m by 1.8m across respectively. These may have been toilets, indicated in one case (EARN96 306) by a salt-glazed drain set into a corner. The other hut bases are larger, with a group of five (EARN96 304-5, 309-10, 313) virtually the same size, measuring between 16.4m and 16.7m in length and between 4.3m and 4.9m in breadth. The remaining hut-bases range from 6.4m to 9.5m in length and from 2.5m to 4.7m in breadth. The locations of stoves can be identified within two of the huts (EARN96 312, 314), in one of which two stoves were placed centrally at either end of the building (EARN96 314). A network of paths and tracks linking the huts may be traced on the ground.
An RAF vertical aerial photograph (541/A/396 frame no.4189 19 May 1948) shows the Nissen huts as roofed; two survived until some 15 years ago according to the farmer at Lintibert. Seven additional structures, all small huts, are also visible on the photograph, five of them lying at the E end of the orchard.
