Archaeology Notes

NH69SW 50 624 938.

A highly polished and beautifully ornamented hammer of hornstone was found when clearing out a ditch at Airdens (NH 624 938). It was in the possession of Donald MacKenzie, Inland Revenue, Bonar Bridge in 1909, and in February 1912 was sold at Sotheby's for $105, the purchaser being the Marquis of Bute who presented it to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in March 1912. It is of a very rare type, comparative examples coming from Morayshire, Staffordshire and Wales.
